Very nice. I really love the base work on this one. It is one of the areas that I really need to work on myself. Trying to get that lava effect to look real like you did.

many thanks, I am very happy with the base. At first I was unsure of how to paint it. Thought about how lava cools on the surface (black) but still shows through red as it continues to move. First I applied an orange base coat. When this dried a thick coat of bright red was applied and ontop of this while it was still wet I stippled on some black. Black ink wash on the side of the "volcano" and a dry brush of very pale grey (ash) and done! Very Quick and I think a good out come.

Great job on that base. I've debated the Allo/Armored Dino bases, and whether the "spouts" are supposed to be volcanic or more like hot springs and associated thick mud (causing the Allo footprints), but you did such a nice job with those colors that I'm tempted to try to copy it. Really like the "footprint" side of the base too, with the pale ash look.

I did not even think of the "hot sping" scenario, DOH! Just goes to show that everything is open to interpritation.
The base on my Armoured Dino is painted as a volcano, but is rubbish. I was looking at it yesterday and thinking of repainting it. I will give some thought to a "hot spring" type setting.

Hey. Thanks for the great tutorial. Mine turned out like crap. It was along the same lines as yours, except a little further along in the cooling stage. Like it had stopped flowing and started cooling, though it was still hot inside. I was inspired by the great work Steve Ross did on his. But I came no where near pulling it off.

Yeah, that is great too. I like the way you guys did three completely different colour schemes for the Allosaurus as well, and they all work.

A lot of inspiring Allosaurus's there! Nice job on the base Gamera! The side with the footprints look like rock. I always used to paint it like the ground... like the rock idea. :}

I did not even think of the "hot sping" scenario, DOH! Just goes to show that everything is open to interpritation. Looking at the manual for the 2nd Ed Allosaurus, the painting instructions clearly indicate that it's intended to be a volcano/lava. So much for my creative interpretation. I still think it makes more sense - why in hades would he be standing near lava, heh.
