Hi all,
just picked up a bargain Alchemy Stego, but it does not have the baby or "Tree" on the base.
Where these two items a later addition or are mine just missing?
I don't really like the baby as the base is too busy with him in my opion, so I am happy with my buy, but would like to know.

The baby and the tree came out the same time as the base, as an all-in-one thing.
The original release of the kit had no base at all, just the stego.

Just good timing and the fact that not many people in the UK are into Aurora stuff (or am I wrong?)
It was on ebay and I just put in the opening bid, no one else bid!
I have started painting him and hopefully should have some photos in a week or two.
He is my first add on, althought I do have the Carnasaur (?) head.
Will try out some brighter colour scheams with my other builds and some custom jobs in the pipeline as opposed to my muted Aurora colours.
Though as most people family,other interests, work and finances slow things down.
Been building / painting kits on and off for 40 years and although mine do not stand up to some of the stuff in say AFM I am happy with mine and will continue with the hobby as long as I can.

When I was kid in 70s UK, Aurora PS stuff was way more pricey than other dino kits like Lindberg and Airfix. They weren't available in as many shops so their popularity was limited by pocket money levels. The other weird thing was, because they were exciting and bright, there was always a faint sense of British disapproval that they weren't educational enough! Anyone who had them though, loved them! There's certainly not a lot of real PS stuff on UK e-bay auctions that's a fact, especially add-ons. I love the Steg, its a superb model, but in a sense its too-little like an action figure though its from an aurora design. Most of the PS are made to play with and monolithic. The heads are straight forward, the legs by the sides and straight down. The Steg in its own way is too convincing in its pose. The Iguanodon is the best in that sense. It has chunky rotating legs its looking straight forward and its features are exaggerated. When I look at add ons I ask, if I was a kid in the 70s would I have been excited or disappointed? Does it look like it has stepped from the pages of a comic book? Not many add ons can tick those boxes for me.

That is why I love the Primeval stuff.
They feel like PS kits.
As far as the steg, I completely understand what you are saying. IT does feel very static and un-PS. But I think that is due to it being based on Dave's design sketch.
I'd like to think that if Aurora actually made the kit, the legs would turn like all the others.
And that the head and tail would have been engineered to swivel. So it could be put in the designed pose, but also other looks.

I have to agree with you Art.
In the early 70's there where no readily available dinosaur kits or figures.
My dad used to make me models from plastacine ( none setting clay ).
Then we discovered Pyro, Triceratops was my first.
Then came Aurora!
There was a shop where I lived that had a display of them all built and painted by someone in the shop.
It was love at first sight.
My first Aurora kit was the Tar Pit.
The only one I remember the price of was the T-Rex, about £6.00 !!!!!
I spend all my birthday money on it and mum thought I was mad.
I was so proud as dad carried the huge box through town.
Maybe it is the nostalgia of it all but those sculpts are great.
The stego is too life like for an Aurora kit, but not good enough for a accurate representation.

Thanks for the compliment on the Iggy. Jeff did a bang up job on that one! The Aurora Steg would have had moveable parts like the Trike and spike. I have a copy of the parts break down. All legs were moveable, Head would swivel, Mouth open and shut, The tail section with the spikes rotated. The plates on his back were somewhat like the Godzilla kit. You put the two body ha\lves together with the plates down the middle. I love Rick Wyatts sculpt but I too, would much rather have the styrene version. The base placement was behind the Allosaurus and Trikes bases split between the two. Cool link to the Parts Pit. I had never seen those Stego photos. The current Alchemy kit is cool, but those photos make me want to remake the kit more like Aurora intended.

Too true Monsieur Banks.
I have the Stego, Parasauralophus and Wholly Rhino and really wish the joints were more Aurora like.
I still love the kits, don't get me wrong.
When the Iggy came out and the Struthy I was stoked when I saw that Aurora look. The bases were so awesome in all.

Nice work G! Love the blood red plates.  Even though this big boy doesn't have that Aurora quality, It sure is a nice addition to the collection. One I'm very glad was done!  If I can find them, I'll post some pics of the test shots of the steg parted out. I'll also apologize in advance for any crappy pics due to the fact they are photocopied prints from photocopy from a photocopy.  |
