I read the note on Trevor's website about the cave wall piece from the Cave Bear kit being required to form a complete, round Cave. If my recollection serves me, this is not the case. I remember putting two Cave kits together, and I believe that they fit together to form a complete round unit.
The wall section from the Cave Bear kit only connects to other Cave wall sections on one side, so it can't really be used to form a completely connecting unit.
And I remember that although putting two Caves together to form a megacave was fun in theory, the end result was not that appealing. The best part of the Cave was the contents, which were no longer visible.

Even though having two caves, this gave the kit more real estate to spread out more cave accessories and to maybe add a few more cave walls. I have seen a few very nicely done caves done this way without hiding all the "best parts".

That's a very good point. As a kid, I was never really in love with the Cave. But in retrospect, it was actually very clever of Aurora to even think about creating such a kit for the series. I used to put the eohippus from the Jungle Swamp in the Cave to be the Cro-Magnon family's pet.

And speaking of the Cave Bear, I was very interested to read on Trevor's site that it was originally intended to be a modern-day bear for a different Aurora series. That totally makes sense. I never thought that the Cave Bear truly looked prehistoric. And the fact that it didn't really stand on its own always bugged me.

I recently spent ages looking for this kit at a decent price and got one already built. I had one as a kid and I concur, it looked way too tame for a PS kit. It looked more like a Grizzly from a wild life series. It was moulded in black too, which always looked odd next to all the other bright colours. In the UK the cave was a bright orange almost glowing.

That is another very good point. The extremely dark colour of the Cave Bear kit does make it seem even less interesting. The Giant Woolly Mammoth is also brown, but it's a slightly lighter shade and it has those beautiful ivory-coloured tusks and base.

If my recollection serves me, this is not the case. I remember putting two Cave kits together, and I believe that they fit together to form a complete round unit. Doubtful. If you look at the cave, the roof overhangs both sides of the walls. 2 roof sections are larger than 3 wall sections. So, if you put two of them together, this exaggerates the point even further. You need a 7th wall section to to make it all the way around. This is true. It really only fits well on one side. But the other is 'close enough' to make it work.

I stand corrected! Now that I think about it, maybe I used a wall piece from a third Cave kit to form my full-circle Cave. I just remember that I definitely didn't use the wall piece from my Cave Bear kit because of the colour difference. (I didn't paint my Cave walls.) Another possibility is that I didn't actually attach the roof to the walls.
