Lately I haven't had a lot of time to do much modeling. Busy at work, busy at home, the usual. I have acid reflux pretty bad and take meds for it to keep it reasonable. However, Every so often I get a moment that it just comes up and burns for quite some time. Anyway, not to go medical on this thread, I just wanna say that I used this to my advantage and started a kit bash of a Diabloceratops from the remnants of a revell/monogram spike and trike. Got no pics of it right now but its a start. Here's a preview of the creatures just in case: www.google.com/search?q=diabloceratops&espv=2&biw=1600&bih=799&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Kac6Vd_cE4yzogSt14GIAw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQI used the Spike head for the main setting. I molded and cast some Trike frill scutes for the edges of the spike frill after I cut the two bottom horns off of both sides. I removed the cheek plates and replaced them with two of the four horns that I cut off. Resized the Trike main horns and placed them above the eyes of the Spike head. Cut the nose horn off and will replace that with some putty and shape it so there is a small nose horn or maybe two. This is as far as I got last night/this morning. If I get another bout of the reflux tonight, who knows? I might be up puttying the parts and blending them into the head. I have a body already prepared for such a beast. I altered the legs and tail previously. When done, and all is perfect, I'll order a nameplate to go with it and create a base for him. This just might get me excited to work on the other 6 Ceratops conversions I plan on! (Torosaurus, Einiosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, Monoclonius, Penteceratops, Agathumas....Any others I missed???) Oh yah, Chasmosaurus!!!

Jealous. Both because I haven't had time for any modeling at all in a looooong time. And because I wish I had all those ceratops heads. I only got one of those from Mike and didn't have the cash for more before he retired them.

Don't be jealous Trevor. I haven't any of Mikes conversion heads either. I was like you, didn't have the cash at the time so now I'm going to convert and create my own.

What a great idea! It's really clever how you're combining the two heads. I'd love to have a crack at this myself if you don't mind me borrowing your idea. Really looking forward to following your progress on this, not that I'm wishing you another bout of reflux!

No reflux today but did a little putty work for the cheek horns and the nose horns. Yep, I decided to go with two instead of one nose horn! Putty work is not my strongest ability and I don't really like it but for this case, quite necessary. Also, anyone got a suggestion as how to either fill in the slit of his eye or to completely change it out? I'm wading through uncharted waters here. Since he's changing types of ceratops, I'd like to change a few other small details at the same time. fud if you wanna use the blueprint of this kit bash for your own, be my guest. Won't be kitting it.

Thanks for that mate. I'd love a Diabloceratops but my sculpting skills don't extend to making one from scratch. At least using your Franken-dino approach I've got a chance of coming up with something half decent. As for the eyes, you can get some pretty cool looking glass dragon or monster eyes off ebay for about $6 a pair. Another option is ball bearings. I made up some painting practice eye sections using ball bearings and Apoxie sculpt. The bearings are only a few cents each, just make sure to use a primer suitable for metal.

I'm thinking for the eyes to cut them out and replace them with a smooth round surfaced resin, plastic or something else light weight. The ball bearings are an option but I think are too heavy. I might even cast up a couple of partial bearings or marbles. Don't need the whole thing just a percent to fill in the eye socket. Thanks FUD!

Okay, if you wanna check out my progress on this, email me and I'll forward pics to you. I don't want to tie up any space for multiple pics since this will be an on going process for a time. We'll save it for the finished project. I did cast up some eyes and put them in. One nice thing about it, I now can cast up some eyes for future projects. another thing I leartned is to do the eyes prior to gluing the head together. This made it difficult to clean out the old eyes and replace with the new ones.

Hey Steve, do you have a Hobby Lobby near you? they have plastic and glass doll eyes and animal looking eyes like cat eyes. they also have all kinds of glass and plastic eyes on line at taxidermy places in all kinds of sizes measured in mm and colors; these can really bring a piece to life in a way painting them just can't. At last years WF Shane Foulks had these eyes added to a bunch of his pieces on display, they looked awesome; I think he's starting to add them to his pieces as an option. I bought a couple bags of them years ago in different sizes and even baked a set into a sculpy dino once. the edges that touched the clay melted just a bit but over all they looked great. just a thought.

Thanks Steve and Trevor for posting the pics in the gallery. He looks brilliant and I definitely want to try it myself. Casting the eyes makes a lot more sense than using ball bearings or whatever. What diameter did you use for them? Ceratopsians are my fav's and with a little ingenuity, Apoxie sculpt and putty the possibilities are endless! I've just finished my first dino, a Lindberg Raptor. It's in the other dinos section and I gotta say that dinos are way more fun than tanks! Can't wait to see what you come up with next. Cheers, Gareth.

Thanks for the input Jeff. I do have a hobby Lobby close by. Just gotta find a free moment (during their business hours) to get there and check out those eyes.
I used a couple of random marbles I found lying about. They're a tad bit too big diameter wise but it sufficed. I'll look around for some smaller ones in case I wanna cast more up and the glass eyes don't work out for me.

with a little ingenuity, Apoxie sculpt and putty the possibilities are endless! I still remember the first custom build I ever saw of one of the ceratops. Jeff's sweet creation. www.tylisaari.com/prehistoricscenes/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=60Now, it's really cool to see Steve doing the same kind of thing. I know with his imagination we are going to see some really interesting concepts.

That was an awesome model. With the replacement heads and all the new ceratopsians out there I'm surprised no one is offering replacement legs(hint hint).

I/We(AroarA)is/are currently working on replacement tails for the ceratopsians. 3 types currently. We/I will be offering those up in the near future. these should be quicker to make than full kits. The legs have been a wonderment to me too as to why nobody has done any. I made some different position ones for my kits but none acceptable for molding, casting and selling IMO. If all goes well, that would be an option. Back legs for sure but do we need any extra front legs???

Happy Mothers day to all the Females in your life! Just posted new pics. It's all primed and ready for painting. Gonna work on the body now. trying to figure out some sort of spikey or knobby scutes to put on him (Since he is a "Devil" dinosaur).

Thats a fine piece of sculpting and it looks like a real aurora release, not just any old kit bash. Perhaps one of the best converted spike dinosaurs I've seen. it really looks the part. Love the idea of scutes. Perhaps a few ridged ones or low spikes on the haunches trailing off to the tail to give it a bit of height.
